International Women's Day-March 8, 2010

Has anyone ever heard of International Women's Day(IWD) which is celebrated on March 8th of every year? Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/ defines IWD as a major day of celebration of women's respect, appreciation and love towards their economic, political, and social achievements. This day has similarities to Valentine's Day and Mother's Day. Just to give you some history, IWD was first observed on February 28 1909 in the United States and then throughout Europe. It became official on March 8th in 1913. There was very limited promotion of IWD until the 1960's feminist movement. Many gifts are given to women such as flowers and chocolate from not only men but from children as well. There were accusations that men felt discriminated against, but no legal actions have surfaced in the public eye. As a social services professional, I must admit this is the first time I have ever heard of this day. This tells me the media and service organizations must unite to promote IWD more so the public can be more aware of this event. I located a video posted by NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Association)Community on March 5, 2010 which illustrates how inequality continues to exist in other parts of the world. NATO provides assistance in cases of war. Click below on the link to view this brief but informative video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDghe7j1Tt4
